Nutrition Services:
nutrition@jcoa.net
Jefferson Council on Aging provides nutrition services to persons age
60+ and their spouses, regardless of age. Service is provided five days
per week and consists of a noon meal that meets 1/3 of the daily
nutritional requirement for an older individual. Meals are purchased
from a vendor,
Valley,
who prepares the food at a central kitchen and delivers the prepackaged
meals to senior centers and nutrition sites throughout Jefferson
Parish. Meals are provided at congregate locations and may be home
delivered to individuals who are home bound because of frailty or
disability. In many areas of the country this service is often referred
to as “Meals on Wheels.”
How to Apply for Meals:
Persons age 60 or older may apply for congregate or
home delivered meals service by:
1. Contacting the Jefferson Council on Aging
Information and Assistance (I&A) division to complete the in-take
information on completing the online
services application form.
2. Arranging an interview appointment with the Care Management Worker
to complete the in-take form at the meal site or applicant’s
residence.
3. Assuring the Nutrition office that the consumer understands that
they will be receiving from JCOA only a regular diet that follows the
Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA).
4. Cooperating by signing all required documents such as the
grievance procedure, rules, and answering questions needed to
complete the assessment process.
Home Delivered Meals:
Home Delivered Meals is a service designed to help
seniors maintain their independence as they face financial, physical,
or emotional hardships. In many areas of the United States and Canada
this service is referred to as “Meals
on Wheels”. A hot meal designed to meet one-third of the daily
requirements for senior nutrition is delivered to the homes of seniors
who, due to frail health, are unable to shop and/or cook for
themselves. In addition to the nutritional benefit, this program
provides a yearly wellness check for seniors. They are provided to:
- Those who have been identified as being ill or
homebound, have no other assistance and are no longer driving and
have an immediate need for having meals home delivered.
- Persons who live on or near established home
delivered meals routes.
- Persons who have completed the Care Management
in-take forms with Care Management staff and have assured JCOA that
they may have a “regular diet”.
- Lunch Meals are delivered Monday through Friday
and must be accepted at the consumer’s residence.
There is such a need in the community for this
service. Not only is the meal essential to the senior, the daily
contact of senior with the meals deliverer is also vital to their well
being.
